There are some small shops that do this, you might just have to go out of your way to find em. The Wine Thief in the East and Vinifera Wines and Ales in Plymouth in the West. Both small shops but the employees know every wine in the store and are enthusiasts. Vinifera always has a ton of stuff on sale.

My two cents: the only way to improve ma and pa liquor stores is to allow wine and beer to be sold in grocery stores. When that happens, the local liquor stores will have strong incentive to become boutiques that specialize in craft beer and wines, with great service, knowledgeable staff, tasting and pairing events, live music and even community sponsorships to charitable events.

Great cost vs value comments, especially the $5 vs $8 glass example. Living in California's Santa Rita Hills appellation I have done some "Wine Math" of my own that you might enjoy... Ever wonder how many grapes are in a glass of wine? Wine-Math.com, or watch the 90 second stop action teaser @ bit.ly/winemath. Cheers!

Great article. I also see so many shops/stores that have people who are not educated about wine working in them. It creates a terrible environment for those who walk in the door, excited to be informed about the "latest and greatest" or the "best hidden gem", etc.

I am loving Allison's new blog, her personality really shines through - and it's a super shiny personality to begin with! Makes me wish that I still lived in the Twin Cities and could raise a glass with her again!

Great take, man.
And you picked the right kind of Kosta browne. I've found the appellation wines to be better than the single vineyards. Dropped off the mailing list when the prices skyrocketed almost overnight.

And it's so easy. Riedel makes some wonderful restaurant level stemware that I've been using for years. Sometimes... after my heartbeat slows back to normal, I'm really glad the ding I just gave my glass didn't shatter it.
I don't usually mind bringing my own stemware; what I don't like is the stigma that seems to be there by doing so. But... that's not to hard to work through.
