Super Tuscans: The renegades of Italian Wine
September 11, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
It’s a category that fascinates many but equally confuses. What is a “Super Tuscan?” What makes it super? How do you know what is in it? Some are $20, some are $200 … what is the logic?
In this new class we’ll explore every aspect of this fascinating wine category while tasting incredible examples made in a variety of styles.
We’ll start with the history. The ideas behind “Super Tuscans” have their roots in post World War II Italy, as the economy lurched forward but never quite took off. In the heart of Chianti Classico, where Sangiovese is held sacred, a renegade group of producers hatched a plan: let’s plant what we want, how we want, and sell it the way we want.
In a traditional land full of “this is the way we do things” attitude, this was a social earthquake.
Then we’ll dive deep into the history of “Super Tuscans” and explain very clearly what they are and are not. We’ll cover the range of offerings out there, from the affordable to the elite, while tasting a wide range of fantastic wines including some of the best known brands.
Included will be an overview of Tuscan wine history, geography, topography, wine styles, and a list of the most well known Super Tuscans and the cepage (blending varieties) of each one.
I hope you can join us for this new and highly anticipated class!
