The South Africa Wine Masterclass with guest expert Jesse Balsimo
“SOUTH AFRICA’S RICH ARRAY OF HIGH-QUALITY WINES AWAITS TO BE DISCOVERED. WITH THE NUMEROUS SMALL LABELS AND A RANGE OF VARIETIES SHOWCASING THE COUNTRY’S DIVERSE TERROIR, THIS IS THE TIME TO START EXPLORING SOUTH AFRICAN WINE.”— JAMES MOLESWORTH, WINE SPECTATOR
The wines of South Africa have never been better, and experts worldwide have started putting more and more attention on this amazing land that falls somewhere between the Old World and New World.
The South African wine industry traces its roots to 1685, long before wine was made in many places other than Europe, with the establishment of the Dutch East India Company. Over the centuries, European know-how brought the quality level up and up with every generation.
Fast forward to the 20th century and everything started to change. As we’ll learn, economic forces of supply and demand plus political forces of apartheid combined to leave the industry in shambles. Here was a country with the infrastructure, the labor force, and arguably some of the best vine-growing terroir outside of France, but producing cheap wine through a state-owned co-op.
Then the wine revolution happened, and suddenly South Africa is making world-class wines that nobody thought was possible. Sommeliers the world over have discovered the amazing range of wines, while top-notch importers have brought some of the best of the best to the United States.
This class will open your eyes (and palate) to the amazing changes that have come to the wines of South Africa in the last twenty years. Presenting stories, information, maps, history, explanation of their amazing sustainability programs, and much more will be Jesse Balsimo, founder of TruVino100, an import company specializing in South Africa.
Look forward to amazing wines, precise and accurate information, and more.
