Barolo and Barbaresco: the greatest wines of Italy
October 14, 2013 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
BAROLO AND BARBARESCO
An examination of the greatest wines of Italy
Monday October 14th, 2013
6pm, North Loop Wine and Spirits
The regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, in the northwestern Italy region of Piedmonte, produce what are undeniably the greatest wines of that country. Produced with the one-of-a-kind Nebbiolo grape, these are ageworthy wines of provenance and structure.
So what makes the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco so special? That is the key question in this class featuring top end wines from a number of spectacular producers.
We will begin with discussing the history and geography of the region, including their special connection with Burgundy in France, and continue by diving directly into the terroir of Piedmonte, focusing on the Nebbiolo grape and how the wines of Barbaresco and Barolo are fundamentally different.
One of the core questions of Piedmonte will be at the center: is it the place or the winemaker? This is a continuous question in this region, where the ‘old school’ winemakers and the ‘new school’ winemakers have fundamentally different philosophies.
The tasting will consist of five stunning examples, ranging in price up to $100 a bottle and a variety of vintages. This will be a rare opportunity to taste this type of range side by side.
The comprehensive discussion will include the food and tourism of the area, with specific suggestion on tour guides, wineries to visit, and a stunning but affordable B&B high on a Barbaresco ridge that few know about.
The wines of Barolo and Barbaresco are special indeed, and seats for this premium tasting are limited.
