Icons of California Wine: Ridge VineyardsFriday, April 4th, 6:30pm
Continuing our series of “Icons” we will enjoy an evening learning about the history and philosophy of one of the most legendary names in the wine world: Ridge Vineyards.
“…for a half-century, Ridge has made one of California’s greatest cabernet sauvignons, Monte Bello, in a remarkably consistent style independent of the twists and turns of fashion. Ridge has also been the leading standard-bearer for zinfandel, which has likewise followed a serpentine path of styles.” – Eric Asimov, New York TimesFrom its humble beginnings (almost as a ‘hobby winery’) on the top of the Santa Cruz mountain range, to the hiring of Paul Draper and the ideas he brought to the table, and the continuation of the “Ridge style” of balance and elegance even against the forces of the marketplace, we will cover it all.Of particular note will be an overview of their key vineyard holdings and single vineyard wines: Lytton Springs, Geyserville, York Creek (we will taste the last vintage of this historic wine that will be made), Dusi Ranch, Pagani Ranch, and Monte Bello. We will taste a range of selections and vintages, including an older Ridge Zinfandel to help understand their aging potential. The highlight of the evening will be a tasting of the rare and revered Monte Bello. With the current press and scores that Ridge has received, having a line up such as this to taste is becoming a rarity indeed. I hope you can join us.
