La Rioja Alta: Complete Portfolio Tasting

Twin Cities Wine Education LLC is proud to present
LA RIOJA ALTA
A complete portfolio tasting
The lineup of wines (minus the 890 Gran Reserva), being guarded by my assistant, Ernest Hemingway. Yes, he has extra toes.
Rioja, Spain is an area that has intrigued me more and more in the last ten years. The wines are often detailed yet bold, old school but (more often lately) clean. Over the years I’ve developed great appreciation for many Rioja producers but one that stands out above others is La Rioja Alta.
Located in Haro, Spain, La Rioja Alta epitomizes the perfect combination of ultra old-school winemaking with modern practices in the winery. They truly allow the wine to make itself and show itself, often holding the wine back for a decade or more before release.
These wines have mesmerized me for years. The basic “Vina Alberdi” has been one of my favorite go-to wines for well over ten years, with a hypnotic combination of dried fruits, exotic spices, peppery edges, and a fringe element of soy sauce meets orange rind. And this is their “entry level” wine!
So for the first time I’m going to pop the entire portfolio from La Rioja Alta for one special evening of discussion and learning. From the starter level “Vina Alberdi” all the way to the rare and refined “Grand Reserva 890” that retails for over $100 a bottle.
Of course extensive handouts and maps will be included, with a deep education on the region of Rioja and what makes these wines so special. The first half of the class will be all about Rioja, its history, geography, geology, and more while tasting a variety of wines. The second half will concentrate on our examination of La Rioja Alta.
Included in the tasting will be: La Rioja Alta “Vina Alberdi” Reserva Rioja 2006 La Rioja Alta “Vina Arana” Reserva Rioja 2004 La Rioja Alta “Vina Ardanza” Reserva Rioja 2004 La Rioja Alta “Gran Reserva 904” Grand Reserva Rioja 1998 and the rarely opened … La Rioja Alta “Gran Reserva 890” Grand Reserva Rioja 1995
Plus a series of wines at the opening of the class as we learn more about Rioja in general.
Note: vintages subject to change based on winery release schedules and availability, but this is one winery I never worry about regarding vintages … they will simply not produce wine on sub-par (or even just barely below average) vintages. Seriously.
