Twin Cities Wine Education LLC is proud to present a very special evening
Pousse d’Or “Clos des 60 Ouvrées” Vertical Tasting 2008-2012
Possibly the best Burgundy tasting of the year
Ernest Hemingway takes his job, the guarding of the Pousee d’Or bottles, seriously
Burgundy is difficult to get your head around, this we know. The enormous vintage variances, the personalities of the thousands of producers, and the sheer kaleidoscope of terroir profiles combine for a head spinning (and expensive) hobby. How best to learn?
I regularly teach the Burgundy Masterclass to help with the overall picture, and it does a good job of introducing students to the complexity of the subject. Occasionally I’ll do a class that gets more detailed, but the question remains: how best to learn about a particular producer, terroir, or vintage?
That’s where this particularly special evening comes in.
Pousse d’Or is a personal favorite producer of mine, with a long history of top level wines made with precision and detail. Their history is fantastic, and their landholdings in Burgundy are the envy of the valley.
Through luck, I’ve happened upon a small vertical of their prized “Clos des 60 Ouvrées” Premier Cru Monopole wines, and after six months of resting in my cellar I’m ready to open them on October 22nd.
The Clos des 60 Ouvrées vineyard is entirely owned by Pousse d’Or and is located in the southern section of Volnay, a region cherished for their limestone soils. The wines from this vineyard are surreal in their detail along with their transparency of vintage. At an average price of over $100 per bottle, these wines are rarely open to taste especially in a vertical format such as this.
This class might be the best education you can find on modern Burgundy vintages.
We’ll start with a very short overview of Burgundy and current trends/vintages while tasting through some good regional wines. We’ll dive into Volnay as a subregion of note and what sets it apart (with wines to taste, of course).
Then it’s time for the big show: pouring the Pousse d’Or vertical and stepping through them one at a time, while overviewing what vintage characteristics are evident.
Along with the tasting, we will cover the storied history of this estate and the numerous owners from the Duvault-Blochet family to the present day owners, the Landanger family, and everybody in-between.
