The Amazing World of Riesling
September 14, 2013 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Some wine experts call it the greatest grape in the wine world. Others credit it as the first wine the ever liked; the grape that pushed them into their now favorite hobby.
Regardless of your opinion about Riesling one thing is for sure: there is an AMAZING variety of Rieslings throughout the world, and this class will be an eye-opener for all involved.
We’ll start with a detailed discussion about the Riesling varietal and how it has come to be the king in cooler weather regions such as Ontario, Candada, and the Mosel Valley of Germany. The physiology of this particular grape is fascinating (especially compared to grapes such as Chardonnay).
We will continue with an overview of where the varietal is grown throughout the world, and the basic style of wine for each particular area. Did you know Australia makes some of the most stunning bone dry Rieslings around? Can you name the major Riesling regions of Austria? What legendary Napa Valley producer makes a tiny bit of some of the most highly regarded Riesling around? Why are the Rieslings of the Mosel Valley so cherished by wine geeks? All these questions will be answered, and more!
Of course to learn about great Riesling we have to taste great Riesling. Our selections will include a wine from some of the oldest vineyards of Australia (bone dry in style), a legendary producer from Alsace, France (including a history lesson about this important area), and of course a stunning selection from the Mosel Valley in Germany.
Especially if you’re at all cynical about Riesling, this class will blow you away and you’ll leave changed. Guaranteed. We will wrap up the class with a discussion of food and Riesling pairings including planning for the upcoming holiday season.
Class begins at 1pm sharp at North Loop Wine and Spirits. Hope you can join us!
