The Legendary Last Gems of Alois Kracher

February 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Twin Cities Wine Education presents a special night of the rarest of rare dessert wines

The Legendary Last Gems of Alois Kracher

Alois Kracher was a larger than life figure who departed at far too young an age, dying of cancer in 2007 at the age of 48. In his years, his outsized personality matched his reputation for incredible, dynamic, work-intensive sweet wines that took the world by storm.

His wines were made in a painstaking process of allowing the variable botrytis spore to land on select vineyards, take hold, and dessicate the grapes. Late harvests at incredibly high sugar levels were followed by some of the slowest fermentations in the wine world. The numbering system developed by him allowed fans of his wines to know his suggested drinking order in terms of overall power and sweetness.

From the company website:

“Luis” Kracher was one of the greatest visionaries in winemaking and was a driving force behind the “Austrian wine wonder” during the 1990s and a motor behind the renaissance of noble sweet wines. The whole wine world mourned the premature death of Luis, who – as a trained chemist – began his winemaking career at his father’s estate aged twenty-two years old.

He created a new style of dessert wine, in which the fruit character, finesse and balance of the wine were far more important than just mere sweetness. The 1991 vintage brought Kracher his first international acclaim, and shortly afterward, his name would become synonymous with cult sweet wines, especially in America. He was relentlessly eager for the innovative and created a number of delicatessen products that would feature his sweet wines, from blue cheese to wine jelly, grappa, vinegar, and even chocolate. He developed lasting friendships from China to California, and was tireless in his efforts as an ambassador to promote Austrian specialties.”

In this very special tasting, we present a handful of the last bottles in Minnesota produced by the legend.

2005 “Number 1” Welschriesling Trokenbeeren Auslese
2001 “Number 2” Muskat Ottonel Trockenbeeren Auslese
2005 “Number 5” Chardonnay Trockenbeeren Auslese
2005 “Number 6” Muskat Ottonel Trockenbeeren Auslese
2001 “Number 7” Chardonnay Trockenbeeren Auslese
2002 “Number 9” Chardonnay Trockenbeeren Auslese

Note: due to the nature of the wines (incredibly high sugar levels) and the value of the wines (each 375ml bottle is in the range of $100-130), we will be pouring one ounce of each wine per person, max of 10 people for the class.

We hope you can join us for this fabulous once-in-a-lifetime tasting.
