The New California Wine

September 29, 2014 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The New California Wine
A wine class on the hottest wine topic of the year

In late 2013 The New California Wine by Jon Bonné hit the shelves and changed the world. In this very important book, Bonné details the emerging movement of new winemakers in California that are playing by their own rules, doing their own thing. Some are going for terroir-driven expression (Lioco, Gamling & McDuck). Some are going for winemaker thumbprint (Scholium Project). Others are finding nearly abandoned ancient vineyards of obscure varietals and slowly bringing them back to life (Mathiasson).
The common thread of the winemakers profiled is that they are returning to an older style of winemaking, harkening back to the early days of Napa Valley when wines such as Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the Judgement of Paris tasting. It’s a return to a lower alcohol, not as extracted, and more terroir driven style of wine.
Our tasting will be a celebration and examination of this new movement. We’ll start with an overview of the book, addressing key issues such as alcohol content, vineyard age, common vs. uncommon varieties, and more. Then we’ll dive into a tasting of some of these upstart producers and discuss the validity of their positions.
It’s going to be great! Hope you can join us.
