Understanding the wines of Rioja
January 12, 2013 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Spanish wine history is full of starts and stops over the course of 2000 years (far more so than France or Italy), resulting in a fractured wine system that didn’t really start great momentum until the late 20th century. One exception, however, is the famous region of Rioja. This class will take a multi-pronged approach to understanding this incredibly important region and the stunning wines it produces. First, we’ll discuss the history of Rioja (and Spanish wine in general), focusing on the relationship Rioja developed with Bordeaux in the late 19th Century. Next we’ll examine the grapes of Rioja with extensive discussion on Tempranillo but also talking about lesser grapes (and tasting examples, such as a 100% Graciano). Lastly we’ll detail the laws of Rioja including the labeling of Crianza, Riserva, Gran Riesrva and more. The tasting will include stunning examples of wines from many of these categories, and the class will receive detailed handouts and maps to help complete your education. Only $25 per person — all online registration fees paid by Twin Cities Wine Education LLC.
