WINE AND WAR: How the French saved their national treasure
In the book Wine and War by Don and Petie Kladstrup, some amazing stories were told. Stories of winemakers held as prisoners of war. Stories of tunnels, hiding, resistance, and daring. Stories of horrible vintages, and legendary bottles. And most of all, stories of heroes overcoming incredible odds, and the wines that gave them hope on the journey.
Join us for a special class tasting through and learning about the wines and winemakers discussed in the book Wine and War. We’ll cover the Hugels of Alsace, the Drouhins of Burgundy, the Huets of the Loire, and much more. Throughout the class we’ll track the great war and how the wine industry adapted to it, including amazing stories about occupation, enemies becoming friends, and brothers forced to fight for opposing sides. And we will finish with the incredible story of Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” and what became of the stolen wines.
We’ll taste a wide range of wines, from Champagne to Bordeaux, highlighting the producers discussed in the book. Make no mistake, we’ll be tasting some outstanding wines indeed.
The book Wine and War by Don Kladstrup is highly recommended to read ahead of our gathering. It will help give texture and perspective to the class.
