Hi everyone –
As you know, I’m a huge fan of Rioja because it’s one of the only places left on the planet that ages the wines appropriately for us ahead of distribution and purchase. This develops tertiary characteristics that are impossible to develop any other way.
Dried tobacco leaves, tea leaves, dried raspberry, worn leather … all the amazing things you can only find in Rioja wines with a touch of age.
And: size matters in the wine world. The smaller the bottle, the faster it will age. The larger the bottle, the slower it will age.
Sharing wines in a magnum format (1.5L, or two regular sized bottles) is a joy. Why?
- You have to have a party. You have to invite people over.
- High quality wines from magnums often taste even better than in a 750ml.
- It’s just plain cool to pour wine from a magnum sized bottle.
We have a gem here, and only 12 magnum sized bottles are available at a major discount.
Señorio Pedro Peciña Rioja is a personal favorite of ours, and has always over delivered for the money. The 2014 Crianza is no exception.
91 points from Vinous: “Dark red. Spice-tinged red berry and cherry scents are complemented by hints of coconut and succulent herbs. Shows good energy and cut on the palate, offering oak-spiced bitter cherry and red currant flavors and a tangy suggestion of blood orange. Dusty tannins frame a long, nervy finish that leaves a subtle floral quality behind.”
HERE’S THE BIGGEST SECRET: The winemaker here is Pedro Peciña, former winemaker at the legendary La Rioja Alta. He has acquired a handful of small parcels planted in thin, chalky soils throughout the slightly cooler, high-elevation northern reaches of Rioja. This guy knows his stuff from his time at LRA, and has brought the same techniques, quality, and attention to detail to this wine.
