Hi everyone –
We LOVE scouring the local wine warehouses. The amount of gems that we happen upon is stunning, and every now and then we come across a wine we’ve never heard of at all. This is one of those.
How is it, after 30 years in the local wine business, that any wine brand flies under our radar? Simple: there are A LOT of wineries in the world, and some of them are so tiny in their production level that they never show up anywhere outside of their local area. What also happens is sometimes a local wholesaler decides to represent them, inventory is purchased, and for reasons that are vast and varied the brand just doesn’t stick. It could be the sales team is too busy to launch the brand correctly, or they are distracted by other needs in their territory, who knows.
We happened upon The Withers, sampled the wines, and immediately fell for them. What we are offering are four wines at HUGE DISCOUNTS. The local wholesaler just wants their inventory gone, and these gems are priced to move.

About The Withers
You’ll notice a horse theme on these labels — look really carefully 🙂
A “wither” is the highest point on a horse’s back (see, you learn something new with every newsletter!) and co-founder Kathleen Tow is an accomplished rider. Along with her husband, Andrew Tow, and winemaker David Low (from William-Selyem winery and co-founder of Anthill Farms) they formed The Withers to specialize in elegant, dynamic, limited-production wines.

The Withers Peters Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, 2020
Sourced from the renowned Peters Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA, this Chardonnay benefits from the region’s cool coastal influence and Goldridge sandy loam soils. The wine expresses a beautiful balance of freshness and richness, with aromas of citrus blossom, green apple, and pear. On the palate, it offers bright acidity and minerality, complemented by notes of lemon curd, stone fruit, and a subtle touch of toasted almond. The finish is long and clean, with a hint of salinity that adds to its complexity.
Note from Jason: this is super classy Chardonnay that tip-toes on the line between bright and acidic, and rich and round. In other words, it reminded me of Burgundy. It’s in a great spot for enjoying now, drink anytime in 2025. I had it with a Fettuccine Alfredo and it was delish. Less than 300 cases produced.

The Withers Cinsault El Dorado 2020
This Cinsault comes from high-elevation vineyards in El Dorado County, where warm days and cool nights allow the grapes to develop vibrant fruit flavors while maintaining freshness. Light-bodied and elegant, this wine showcases bright red berry aromas, including raspberry, strawberry, and cranberry, with floral undertones of rose petals and violets. On the palate, it is silky and fresh, with soft tannins and a gentle spice note, making it a versatile and food-friendly wine.
Note from Jason: only 220 cases of this gem were produced. I LOVE old-vine Cinsault from California, for the wines often show a freshness of style that pairs incredibly well with the foods I tend to eat. This wine is a great example of just how good Cinsault can be. Learn more about El Dorado County, and the grape Cinsault.

The Withers Mourvèdre “Ruben” 2018
Sourced from old-vine Mourvèdre plantings in the Sierra Foothills of El Dorado County, “Ruben” is a deep and expressive wine that highlights the earthy, savory qualities of this grape. Aromas of dark cherry, plum, and dried herbs lead into a palate filled with rich blackberry, black olive, and hints of smoked meat. The wine has a structured yet refined texture, with well-integrated tannins and a long, lingering finish that carries a touch of minerality and spice.
Note from Jason: Did you know that Mourvèdre is a naturally anti-oxidative grape? It’s been used in small percentages in the Southern RhĂ´ne for generations in order to help stabilize the wines and help them age longer. This 2018 is at a perfect point (young Mourvèdre can sometimes be a touch too heavy and too muscular). Enjoy this with anything off the grill this spring and summer. It’s also a moderate 13.5% ABV, which you don’t often find with this grape.

The Withers Pinot Noir “English Hill” 2020
Grown in the cool-climate English Hill Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA, this Pinot Noir beautifully reflects its coastal terroir. The nose is filled with fresh red fruit aromas like wild strawberry, cranberry, and pomegranate, interwoven with delicate floral and earthy notes. The palate is elegant and layered, with bright acidity and silky tannins that frame flavors of ripe cherry, raspberry, and a touch of forest floor. Subtle hints of spice and cola add depth, leading to a smooth, lingering finish.
Note from Jason: This was the first wine from The Withers that we tried, and we immediately jumped on trying the other three wines right away. This is super classy cool-coastal Pinot Noir. It’s a particularly great vineyard (8.5 acres in size) that sells fruit to numerous small-production quality-driven winemakers. It’s truly coastal, with wide temperature swings, lots of fog, and wind that smells of the ocean.
Buying advice
We’ve cornered all the remaining inventory of The Withers in the state of Minnesota. There is under 40 bottles of each wine available. We found all of these wines to be detailed, fresh, delicious, and right on point. And with the pricing we have for you, they are a steal.
We have each wine available individually, or a four-pack collection (with the biggest discount).
These are the type of wines to pull out for wine friends, especially those that think they’ve seen and had everything. They were a surprise for me, and it will be a top-notch surprise for them as well.
Thanks, everyone!
