Sidebar: What’s a Somm Kit?

Somm Kits were invented by us in 2020 when the pandemic first started and we were all locked down at home. It’s a curated collection of wines under one theme, that go well together to help with your personal wine education. All Somm Kits include a video of Angela and I stepping through the wines and connecting the dots of the wines as a group. It’s a great way to learn.

So whenever you see the term “Somm Kit” on our websites you can look forward to not only great wine and information, but some video entertainment as well!

Somm Kit: 2020 Tuscan Reds of Donna Laura

Let’s start with this: we simply love these wines.

The story of the start, and naming, of the winery is a great one. From the producer’s website:

The history follows vintner Lia Tolaini Banville from her birthplace in Canada to her ancestral home outside the city of Lucca, where at the age of six on her family’s annual summer holiday, Lia met her Aunt Laura who would become a driving force in her life. Laura was mother to three rough-and-tumble boys and immediately bonded with Lia. Thus began the tradition of yearly visits where during the warm summer days and nights Laura would instill in Lia an appreciation for Italian culture, history, music and most of all art. Laura’s presence in Lia’s life would inspire her as a mother, cook, vintner and businessperson and after graduating with degrees in art and economics and starting a family of her own, Lia would continue to visit her Aunt Laura with her own children growing this family bond.

In 2004 an opportunity arose to write a new chapter in the story, this time at Tolaini Winery in Castelnuovo Berardenga with the production of Lia’s own wine label Donna Laura. A loving tribute to the woman whose lessons of family, tradition and honor would share double billing with Lia’s own heritage. Roman gods Venus, Bacchus and Cupid personifying Lia’s children adorn the labels of Donna Laura Wines, celebrating this legacy of devotion to family and affirming the adage ‘Chi si volta, e chi si gira, sempre a casa va finire’ – no matter where you go or turn you will always end up at home.

The 2020 vintage, and what we can learn here

We’re in a heyday for Tuscan wine lovers. Every vintage from 2015 to 2020 was above average and one of my personal favorites was the 2020 vintage. Early spring frosts cut back the yields naturally, which was followed by a very warm summer achieving full ripeness and an early harvest. 2020 Tuscan wines abound with plump, juicy, and (here comes my favorite word) DRINKY bottles.

But to have three wines from the same winemaking team, same winemaking philosophy, the same base grape (Sangiovese), and the same vintage makes for an opportunity you shouldn’t pass up.

Wine Tech Sheets

Pro tip: When you have a wine that you like, Google the name of the wine with “tech sheet pdf” added to it. Most wineries have these info-packed sheets buried in their websites for the use of sales reps taking the wine out to show customers. But they are great for consumers, with tons of info on one page.

However, take note: sometimes it’s hard to find your exact vintages of tech sheets. Below we have 2021, 2018, and 2019 but the core information is the same from vintage to vintage.

Final thoughts and buying advice

What a great opportunity to get a collection of delicious and affordable wines, plus taste the proof that location, winemaking, and blending all matter.

They are all simply DELICIOUS and extremely well priced (especially in this offer).

We’ve set it up for three pack and six pack sales, along with single bottles. All transactions are through Solo Vino Wine Shop in St. Paul, Minnesota. Click the button below to continue.

Thank you!
