Hi everyone!

This week’s offer is a trio of AMAZING wines brought into the Twin Cities via Lompian Imports (i.e. Sean LaBonty, former shop manager and buyer at Solo Vino). It’s what we call in the business a “DI” or Direct Import, which means the importer/wholesaler buys the wine directly from the winery, bypassing a level of mark-up that results in the wine being about 30% cheaper here in Minnesota than it would be in other states. So right out of the gate you’re getting a great deal.

This trio is our new go-to selection for when people email us saying “We’re having a party and want to pour something awesome but not break the bank.”

Party and event wine is tricky business. You need wines with broad appeal and without pretension. But you also need wines of high intrinsic quality without going off the geek end. Lastly, you need wines that your friends don’t already know, so you can show off how you find the great juice (ahem, here! 🙂

La Villa Real, and the wines of Castilla-La Mancha

The wines of the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain are sometimes called “Don Quixote” wines, named after the legendary “Man from La Mancha” in Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s The Ingenious Knight Don Quixote of La Mancha. The region’s wines have been described as “quixotic” because of its hot summers and cold winters, and because it produces more than half of Spain’s grapes.

You read that right. More than half of Spain’s grapes. Castilla-La Mancha is a wine producing machine, mostly making forgettable wines that get packaged in boxes and bags and sold cheap in supermarkets. But there are also tons of old vineyards producing top notch fruit, along with a handful of winemakers that coax amazing quality out of this affordable base.

This is the heart of value-driven gems from Spain, where dry farming and ancient vines make for bargains that are second to none (Portugal is possibly the only other contender for the title).

La Villa Real White

Tasting note from Chuck Kanski: “Medium weight bodied wine that leans into its bright, acid snap on this finish. An abundance of a soft, lemon/sour finish. Reminds me of a lemon sour candy from my childhood. Food pairings for this wine will be fun. Everything hot, cold, or in between! From a Niçoise salad to ANYTHING off the grill. “

La Villa Real Rosé

Tasting note from Chuck Kanski: “The ‘Color is Summer’ returns and this rosé is excellent. Dried lavender mixed with a fresh cherry bouquet begins your journey. Crazy back and forth fruit profile between Granny Smith apple and cherries again. A perfect patio wine that will happily pair with anything off the grill, anything on the stereo, and any activity in the park. Pop and pour!!!”

La Villa Real Red

Tasting note from Chuck Kanski: “WOW! Perfect nose, perfect body, perfect fruit, perfect finish. Every now and then I taste a wine that I just can’t stop tasting, instant love. The cherry notes continue with this red. Mostly Tempranillo and a nice chunk of Syrah. The balance is pitch-perfect, with medium mouthfeel, firm acids, and a nice mellow finish. Chill it down a touch during the summer months for ultimate pleasure.”

Buying advice

All three of these wines are punching way above their weight class. They have style, flash, balance, acid, length, and flavor that usually comes with far more expensive wines. This kind of combination comes across our glasses about once every three years.

This is stock up wine for the summer, especially at the six-pack pricing. Solo Vino will be carrying this all season, but the price will be higher. Now is the time to stock up and be ready for the May-August parties in the backyard.

Happy shopping, and thank you again for supporting what we do!
